Improving Emissions Standards with Woodsure Approved Firewood

Opulence Stoves is a family run business with over 20 years of experience fitting wood burners. Over the years our business has evolved to meet the needs of our customers which includes changes to the regulatory environment. Most recently there have been two key changes:

EcoDesign Regulation

All newly manufactured stoves are required to meet EcoDesign standards. Simply put an EcoDesign wood burner must meet a set of new minimum seasonal efficiency and maximum emission requirements, thereby making a stove a more environmentally friendly and sustainable choice for heating your home.

To achieve such standards, stove manufacturers have been independently tested to show that they meet the seasonal efficiency and four emission limit provisions as laid down within the Ecodesign regulations. This includes a dramatic reduction in the CO minimum emission limit, click here for further information.

One way in which stove manufacturers have achieved this is by installing more than one baffle plate. This ensures that carbon gases remain within the firebox for longer before terminating into the flue. This allows the primary, secondary and tertiary air supply to reduce emissions associated with burning wood as the stove has a longer period to burn off the residual gases thereby reducing emissions. For more information on how a stove works, click here.

So, our objective is to maintain the temperature of the firebox at higher levels for longer to improve this combustion process. We have found that in some situations, if the fuel is too wet and of a poor quality, due to the gases being retained in the firebox for longer, that gas emissions (smoke) exit into the room rather than up the chimney. This must be avoided using a correctly designed Hetas approved flue installation, as well as using the correct Woodsure approved fuels from accredited suppliers.

Woodsure Ready to Burn Scheme

Fuel is proven to burn with less smoke and harmful emissions and be less damaging to the environment, improving air quality. With a guaranteed moisture content of less than 20%, Opulence Stoves supplies Kiln Dried Firewood species that has been pre-vetted using the knowledge that we have gained over the years to ensure that we only supply the best quality fuels for your wood burning stoves. We have found that some fuels such as oak struggle to perform well in an EcoDesign stove, and other softwoods will burn too fast, for more information click here. We have also found that wet fuels will also cause more of the heat to evaporate up the chimney. Our in-house free delivery service, supplies fuel to the following areas:

Burn Less Wood!

Using dry wood also means that fewer logs are needed to produce the same level of heat. This saves money and reduces emissions because less wood is being burnt.
